Hello brothers and sisters.
We’ve come to the end of a road. Over the last three studies we’ve taken 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 apart word by word, and today we finish the job and then step back to see the whole machine assembled.
Here’s where we’ve been. σιγάω (sigaō), the verb for “be silent,” never means permanent muting in the New Testament. Only situational restraint. λαλέω (laleō), the verb for “speak,” saturates this chapter in reference to specific worship activities, and a blanket reading pits Paul against his own words in chapter 11. ἐπερωτάω (eperōtaō), the verb for “ask,” paired with μανθάνω (manthanō), “to learn,” pointed us straight at the real problem: disruptive, elementary questions fired into the middle of the assembly.
One word remains. It’s the word that anchors the traditional reading, the word that people reach for when they want to argue that this passage lays down a permanent chain of command. Verse 34 says the women are to “be in submission, as the law also says.”
The word is ὑποτάσσω. And it does not mean what most people assume it means.
After we’ve dug into it, I’m going to do something I’ve been holding off on for three studies. I’m going to lay all the pieces on the table at once and make the full case for what I believe these two verses are saying. And I’m going to bring in one more piece of evidence that changes the entire conversation: the very real possibility that Paul didn’t write these verses at all.

The Word
ὑποτάσσω (hypotassō)
Pronunciation: hoop-oh-TAHS-oh
Strong’s: G5293
Meaning: To arrange under, to subordinate, to place in order beneath. In the middle and passive voices, to submit oneself, to yield, to cooperate with, to defer to.
Root: A compound of ὑπό (hypo, G5259, “under”) + τάσσω (tassō, G5021, “to arrange, to order, to appoint”). The picture underneath the word is one of ordered arrangement, of things placed in a deliberate structure.
NT frequency: Roughly 38 to 40 occurrences, depending on the manuscript tradition being counted.
Origin: Here’s a detail that matters more than you’d expect. ὑποτάσσω began its life as a military term. In the army of the ancient world, it described the arrangement of troops in ordered ranks beneath a commander. Soldiers in formation. Divisions slotted into their proper place in the battle line.
But, and this is critical, the word did not stay locked in the barracks. Outside of military usage, ὑποτάσσω softened into something quite different. The lexicons describe its non-military sense as a voluntary attitude of giving in, cooperating, assuming responsibility, and carrying a burden alongside others. Not a boot on a neck. A shoulder under a load.
That range, from rigid military rank on one end to voluntary, cooperative yielding on the other, is the whole ballgame. Because the question that has divided the church for centuries is exactly this: which end of the range did Paul have in mind?
The Voice Changes Everything
If you’ve studied any Greek, you know that Greek verbs have voice, and voice tells you who is doing what to whom. Active voice: the subject acts on something else. Passive voice: the subject is acted upon. And middle voice, which English barely has, means the subject acts on or for itself.
ὑποτάσσω is a shape-shifter depending on its voice.
In the active voice, ὑποτάσσω means to subordinate someone else, to place them under. This is God subjecting all things under Christ’s feet (1 Corinthians 15:27). It’s forceful. Hierarchical. One party ranks another beneath them.
But that is almost never how the New Testament uses the word for relationships inside the body of Christ. When Paul and Peter tell believers to “submit,” they overwhelmingly reach for the middle or passive form, which carries the sense of submitting yourself. Voluntarily. From the inside. It is not something done to you. It is something you choose to do.
This distinction is not a technicality. It is the difference between a slave being forced into rank and a free person choosing to serve. The New Testament’s vocabulary of Christian submission is, overwhelmingly, the vocabulary of voluntary self-giving, not imposed hierarchy.
Hold that, because it’s about to detonate a very common assumption.
The Verse Everyone Forgets: Ephesians 5:21
Here is the single most important thing you need to know about ὑποτάσσω, and it’s the thing most sermons on “submission” skate right past.
Paul uses this word to command mutual submission. Everyone, to everyone.
Ephesians 5:21 (NRSV):
“Be subject to one another (ὑποτασσόμενοι ἀλλήλοις, hypotassomenoi allēlois) out of reverence for Christ.”
Look at that little word ἀλλήλοις (allēlois). It’s a reciprocal pronoun. It means “to one another,” mutually, back and forth. And it sits right next to ὑποτάσσω. Paul is not describing a one-way street where some people rank and others yield. He’s describing a community where every member submits to every other member.
This single verse dismantles the claim that ὑποτάσσω “always” means one-directional submission to an authority. Some very prominent teachers have insisted exactly that, that this word, by its nature, always points from an inferior up to a superior. Ephesians 5:21 says otherwise in seven Greek words. Christians submit to one another. The husband submits to the wife inside the same passage where the wife submits to the husband, because verse 21 governs everything that follows it. Mutual submission is the headwater. Everything downstream flows from it.
So when we arrive at 1 Corinthians 14:34 and read that women should “be in submission,” we cannot simply assume this means “rank yourselves under male authority and stay there.” The word itself doesn’t demand that. The word is at home in a sentence about mutual yielding. The meaning has to come from the context, not from a mistaken assumption that ὑποτάσσω always points one way.
And the context, as we’ve seen across these studies, is the ordering of worship.
Submission to What?
Here’s a question that should stop you cold. In 1 Corinthians 14:34, the women are told to submit. But submit to what?
Read the verse carefully. It does not say “let the women be in submission to their husbands.” It does not say “to men.” It does not say “to the elders.” The object is simply left open: “they are to be in submission, as the law also says.”
This is easy to miss in English, because centuries of interpretation have trained us to mentally insert “to men” or “to their husbands.” But the Greek doesn’t say that. And that absence is a clue.
Submission to what, then? The most natural answer, given everything Paul has been arguing for forty verses, is submission to the good order of worship itself. The whole chapter is about order. Tongues-speakers submit to the rule about interpreters. Prophets submit to the rule about taking turns. And the women who were disrupting the assembly with questions are called to submit to the same principle of order that governs everyone else in the room.
Look at what Paul says just two verses earlier, in the same breath:
1 Corinthians 14:32 (NRSV):
“And the spirits of prophets are subject to (ὑποτάσσεται, hypotassetai) the prophets.”
Same word. Same chapter. And here it describes prophets submitting their spiritual gifts to orderly control. Nobody reads verse 32 as establishing a permanent cosmic hierarchy of prophets over spirits. Everybody reads it, correctly, as being about self-control in the service of order. The prophet governs his own gift so the assembly isn’t thrown into chaos.
Why would ὑποτάσσω mean “orderly self-control for the sake of the assembly” in verse 32 and then suddenly mean “permanent gender hierarchy” two verses later? The burden of proof is on anyone who wants to read the same word two radically different ways in the space of two verses.
“As the Law Also Says”
Now we hit one of the strangest problems in the whole passage. Verse 34 grounds its instruction in “the law”: women should be in submission “as the law also says.”
Which law?
Go looking for it. You will not find a single command anywhere in the Torah, anywhere in the entire Old Testament, that says women must be silent in the assembly. It isn’t there. The Law of Moses regulates an enormous range of human life in exhaustive detail, and nowhere does it command women’s silence in worship.
This is a genuine puzzle, and it cuts in a surprising direction.
Some interpreters point to Genesis 3:16, “he shall rule over you,” as the “law” in view. But that’s a stretch. Genesis 3:16 is not a command; it’s a description of the curse, of the broken state sin introduced into the marriage relationship. Reading it as a divine law to be enforced would mean treating the consequences of the fall as God’s blueprint for how things ought to be. That runs against the entire trajectory of redemption, which is God undoing the curse, not codifying it.
There’s a more provocative possibility, and it connects to something we’ll develop in a moment. Throughout 1 Corinthians, Paul has a habit of quoting the Corinthians’ own slogans and then answering them. “All things are lawful for me” (6:12, 10:23). “It is well for a man not to touch a woman” (7:1). “All of us possess knowledge” (8:1). Again and again, Paul lifts a phrase the Corinthians were throwing around and then pushes back against it.
What if “as the law also says” is another one of these? What if the appeal to a “law” that doesn’t actually exist in the Torah is a tell, a signal that Paul is quoting a restrictive position held by some in Corinth, only to challenge it in the verse that follows?
Because look at what comes immediately after:
1 Corinthians 14:36 (NRSV):
“Or did the word of God originate with you? Or are you the only ones it has reached?”
That is not the tone of a man laying down a rule. That is the tone of a man pushing back. The Greek even opens verse 36 with a particle (ἤ, ē, “or”) that often signals disagreement with what came just before. Some scholars read verses 34-35 as a Corinthian position that Paul quotes and then demolishes in verse 36. “Women should be silent, as the law says”? Paul’s response: “Or did the word of God come from you alone?”
I find that reading compelling, though I hold it with humility, because there’s yet another possibility that would settle the matter even more decisively. And it’s time to talk about it.
The Verses That Might Not Be Paul’s
Here is something most Christians have never been told, and it deserves to be told plainly and fairly.
There is a serious, credentialed scholarly case that 1 Corinthians 14:34-35 was not written by Paul at all. That it was added to the letter by a later hand.
I want to be scrupulously honest about the evidence on both sides here, because this is exactly the kind of claim that gets abused in both directions. So let me lay it out straight.
What supports the case that these verses were added later:
The verses move around. In the manuscripts of the “Western” text tradition (including the important codices D, F, and G), verses 34-35 do not sit after verse 33 where we normally read them. They appear after verse 40, at the end of the chapter. When a block of text floats to different locations in different manuscript families, textual critics take notice, because that kind of dislocation is one of the classic fingerprints of material that was originally a margin note before it got absorbed into the body of the text.
The scholar Gordon Fee, one of the most respected New Testament textual critics of the last century and himself a Pentecostal committed to Scripture’s authority, became convinced these verses were an interpolation. Philip Payne has spent decades building the case in painstaking detail, pointing to a correction in the sixth-century Codex Fuldensis (where Bishop Victor appears to have ordered the passage rewritten without verses 34-35), to the Greek manuscript 88, and to a scribal mark in Codex Vaticanus (the distigme-obelos) that appears to flag an awareness of a textual variant right at this spot.
And there’s the internal evidence we’ve already touched. The verses sit awkwardly in their context. Paul is mid-argument about prophecy and order, and these two verses interrupt the flow. Remove them, and verse 36 follows verse 33 smoothly. The appeal to a “law” that doesn’t exist in the Torah raises further suspicion. And of course, the flat contradiction with 1 Corinthians 11:5, where Paul assumes women are praying and prophesying publicly, is exactly what you’d expect if a later hand inserted a restriction Paul himself never wrote.
What supports the case that these verses are authentic:
Now the other side, and it’s not weak. Every known manuscript of 1 Corinthians contains these verses. Not one surviving copy omits them entirely. That is a heavy fact. The verses are simply relocated in the Western tradition, not absent. And the Western text is notorious among scholars for exactly this kind of sloppiness and rearrangement, which means the dislocation might reflect nothing more than an early copyist’s error rather than a smoking gun for interpolation.
The oldest manuscript we have of this section, Papyrus 46 (dated to roughly 175-225 A.D.), contains verses 34-35 right where we normally read them, after verse 33. Codex Sinaiticus and Papyrus 123 attest the same placement. A textual-critical principle called lectio difficilior, “the harder reading is preferable,” also cuts against interpolation, since scribes tended to smooth out difficulties rather than introduce them, and these verses are nothing if not difficult.
So where does that leave us?
Honestly, in a place of genuine scholarly disagreement. The interpolation theory is serious and is held by serious people. It is not a fringe position invented to make an inconvenient text disappear. But it is also not proven, and thoughtful scholars land on both sides.
I want to be careful here. I am not going to tell you these verses definitely aren’t Scripture. I don’t think the evidence supports that level of certainty, and I have too much reverence for the text to wave away verses that appear in every manuscript we possess.
But I will say this: when the manuscript tradition itself shows this much turbulence around a passage, when ancient scribes were already marking it and moving it and possibly removing it, that turbulence should make us humble. It should make us slow to build a towering doctrine of permanent female silence on top of two verses that the early church itself seems to have handled with visible uncertainty.
The ground under the traditional reading is not nearly as solid as most people have been led to believe.
Putting It All Together
So let’s assemble the machine. Four studies, four words, one picture.
σιγάω told us the silence was situational, temporary, purposeful. The same word Paul used two other times in this very chapter to regulate tongues-speakers and prophets in specific circumstances. Never once, anywhere in the New Testament, a permanent or even locational muting.
λαλέω told us the speech being restricted was the specific, regulated speech of the worship gathering, not any vocal participation. And it reminded us that three chapters earlier, in 1 Corinthians 11:5, Paul took for granted that women pray and prophesy aloud in the assembly. He could not have meant a total prohibition without contradicting himself.
ἐπερωτάω, paired with μανθάνω, told us what the actual problem was: disruptive, elementary questions thrown into the middle of the service by women who were eager to learn but, in that culture, largely untrained. Paul’s solution was not to silence their learning but to redirect it. Ask at home, where the questions can be answered without disturbing the assembly.
And now ὑποτάσσω tells us that the “submission” called for was submission to the good order of worship, the same self-governing order every prophet and tongues-speaker in the room was called to. Not a permanent gender hierarchy. The word itself lives most comfortably in Paul’s command that we all submit to one another.
Add to that the “law” that appears nowhere in the Law, the pushback of verse 36, and the real possibility that these verses weren’t even part of Paul’s original letter, and the traditional interpretation starts to look less like the plain meaning of the text and more like a heavy structure built on a cracked foundation.
Here is what I believe this passage is actually doing. In a specific church, in a specific cultural moment, some women were disrupting worship with questions in a way that created disorder and, in that honor-shame society, brought shame on the gathering.
Paul (or, if the interpolation theorists are right, a later editor speaking into a similar situation) addressed that specific disruption. Be silent, in this situation, the way tongues-speakers and prophets also have to be silent in their situations. Submit to the order of the assembly, the way everyone does. Take your questions home so learning can happen without chaos.
That is worlds away from “women may never speak, teach, or lead in the church.”
The Witnesses the Traditional Reading Has to Explain Away
And here’s the thing. If the traditional reading were correct, if Paul really meant to bar women from vocal ministry and leadership for all time, then Paul spent his entire ministry breaking his own rule.
Consider the women standing in the pages of the New Testament.
Priscilla taught Apollos, an educated and eloquent man, “the way of God more accurately” (Acts 18:26). Luke names her before her husband Aquila in most references, an unusual move in that culture that many scholars take as a mark of her prominence in ministry. Paul calls her his “co-worker” (Romans 16:3). She taught a man. Doctrine. And Scripture records it with approval.
Phoebe is called a διάκονος (diakonos), a “deacon” or “minister,” of the church at Cenchreae (Romans 16:1). It’s the same word used for male ministers throughout the New Testament. Paul entrusted her with carrying and quite possibly reading and explaining the letter to the Romans, the most theologically dense document he ever wrote.
Junia is named by Paul as “prominent among the apostles” (Romans 16:7). For the first twelve hundred years of church history, virtually everyone understood Junia to be a woman and an apostle. It was only much later that some tried to turn her into a man named “Junias,” a name that, as it turns out, is otherwise unattested in the ancient world. The evidence points to a female apostle, honored by Paul himself.
And back in Corinth, the very church we’ve been studying, women were praying and prophesying in the assembly with Paul’s full knowledge and regulation (1 Corinthians 11:5). Prophecy, in Paul’s own ranking in chapter 14, is the highest of the vocal gifts exercised in gathered worship. Higher than tongues. Aimed at the whole congregation for its edification. And women were doing it.
The traditional reading has to explain all of this away. It has to turn Priscilla’s teaching into something less than teaching, Phoebe’s diaconate into something less than ministry, Junia’s apostleship into a man, and the prophesying women of Corinth into an exception it can’t quite account for.
The reading I’ve laid out doesn’t have to explain any of it away. It just lets the evidence stand. Paul worked alongside women in ministry his entire life, and in 1 Corinthians 14 he addressed a specific disruption in a specific church. Those two facts have never actually been in conflict. They only look like a conflict when you stretch two situational verses into a timeless universal law stripped on context.
What This Means for Us
Three things, and then I’ll encourage you to go to your own study and your own conscience before God.
First: The whole Bible has to agree with itself, and it does. The deepest problem with the traditional reading was never a single Greek word. It was that it forced Scripture into contradiction with itself, Paul against Paul, chapter 14 against chapter 11, one verse against the living witness of Priscilla and Phoebe and Junia. When an interpretation makes the Bible fight itself, that’s not a sign you’ve found the hard truth. It’s a sign you’ve misread something. The reading that lets all the evidence stand together, without anyone having to be explained away, has a strong claim to being the right one.
Second: Handle contested texts with humility, and hold people who disagree with grace. I’ve made my case as honestly as I can, but I know sincere, godly believers read these verses differently, and I am not their judge. What I’d ask is simply this. If you’ve been taught the traditional reading as though it were obvious and settled, sit with the evidence we’ve walked through. The situational silence. The self-contradiction a universal reading creates. The missing “law.” The turbulence in the manuscripts. The women Paul himself commissioned. At minimum, the matter is not nearly as closed as it’s often presented. And a doctrine that silences half the church deserves a far more solid foundation than these two turbulent verses can bear.
Third: God has always used the voices of women to carry His word. From Miriam to Deborah to Huldah to Anna to the women who were the first witnesses of the resurrection, God has never been reluctant to speak through daughters as well as sons. Priscilla explained the gospel to Apollos. Phoebe carried Romans. The prophesying women of Corinth spoke God’s word to the gathered church. If God was willing to entrust His truth to their voices, we should be slow, very slow, to build a theology that silences them on the strength of two disputed verses read against the grain of everything else Paul did.
That’s the case. I’ve laid the pieces out as fairly and as fully as I know how. Now go study it for yourself, weigh it before the Lord, and follow the truth wherever the text and the Holy Spirit lead you.

Good observation regarding "aner" (husbands) vs "ahhren" (males) - that nuance is maligned elsewhere in English versions (as are "gyne" (woman/wife) and "thelus" (female)).
I like how you articulated "submission." Seems to me that "translators" and preachers could have saved much confusion if they learned to use "deference" rather than "submission."
That is, if confusion something they truly wished to avoid - which is another issue altogether, albeit related.
