Hello brothers and sisters,
Last time we watched a word cross a language barrier and pick up luggage it was never meant to carry. The translators chose well. The readers, centuries later, filled the container with furniture from their own childhoods.
Now it happens again.
Except this time the word is not the name of a place. It is the word for what you are.
Ask almost any Christian what a human being is and you will get some version of the same answer. There is a body, which is temporary and a bit of an embarrassment, and there is a soul, which is the real you, invisible and immortal, riding around inside the body like a driver in a car. Death is when the driver gets out and walks away.
That picture is so deeply set in us that most believers have never once considered that it might not be in the Bible.
It is not. Not in the way we think. And until we pull it apart, every single thing we say about where the dead are will be built on a foundation the Hebrew Scriptures never poured.
Let’s dig in.

The Word Under The Word
The Hebrew word your Bible usually renders as “soul” is נֶפֶשׁ (nephesh). It shows up something like seven hundred times, and it almost never means what we mean.
Nephesh is the whole living creature. The self. The breathing, hungry, grieving, laughing, embodied person standing in front of you. It is not a component. It is not the spiritual self attached to your body, not the premium interior package installed inside the chassis. It is the animal itself, the whole being, the whole living thing.
Which is why the single most important verse in this entire series is a verse most of us have read a hundred times without noticing what it says.
Genesis 2:7 (LXX/Brenton)
And God formed the man of dust of the earth, and breathed upon his face the breath of life, and the man became a living soul.
Read the last five words again.
The man became a living soul.
He did not receive one. Nobody handed Adam a soul and installed it. God took dirt, God added breath (or spirit, in both Hebrew and Greek it’s the same word), and the result of that addition, standing up and drawing air, was a living soul. Dust plus breath or spirit equals nephesh. That is the equation, and it runs in only one direction.
You do not have a soul. You are one.
And if that is true, then the entire inherited picture has a problem right at the start, because you cannot release a soul from a body when the soul is the whole living thing the body is part of.
Let me show you four more.
Five Windows
Genesis 2:19 (LXX/Brenton)
And God formed yet farther out of the earth all the wild beasts of the field, and all the birds of the sky, and he brought them to Adam, to see what he would call them, and whatever Adam called any living creature, that was the name of it.
This one needs Brenton’s own footnote to see.
Where the English reads “living creature,” Brenton attaches a note telling you what is actually in the Greek. One word. Soul.
The animals are souls.
Sit with that, because it is not a technicality. Every bird in the sky and every beast in the field is a nephesh, a psyche, a soul, in exactly the same vocabulary used of Adam twelve verses earlier.
Scripture uses the same word for the man and for the sparrow.
So if “soul” means an immortal immaterial essence that survives death and flies off to the next world, then Scripture has just told you that your neighbor’s cat has one. Either that, or the word does not mean what we have been trained to think it means.
Scripture makes it clear that the answer is the second one.
The word means living creature. That is all it has ever meant.
Genesis 46:26-27 (LXX/Brenton)
And all the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, who came out of his loins, besides the wives of the sons of Jacob, even all the souls were sixty-six. And the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in the land of Egypt, were nine souls; all the souls of the house of Jacob who came with Joseph into Egypt, were seventy-five souls.
Here is Scripture taking a census.
And it counts souls (the Hebrew uses nephesh and the Greek uses psyche). Sixty-six of them, then nine more, and seventy-five in total, walking into Egypt on their own feet with their livestock and their luggage.
Nobody in that passage has died. These are living, sweating, travel-weary people, and the text simply calls them souls because that is the ordinary word for people. We still do this occasionally in English when we say a ship went down with four hundred souls aboard, and when we say it we mean four hundred human beings, not four hundred detached spirits.
You count souls the way you count people. Because souls are people.
Leviticus 17:11 (LXX/Brenton)
For the life of flesh is its blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for its blood shall make atonement for the soul.
Now watch something extraordinary happen inside one verse.
Where Brenton writes “life of flesh,” the Greek word is psyche. Where he writes “atonement for your souls,” the Greek word is psyche again.
Same word.
Twice.
Rendered two different ways in English, in a single sentence, because our translator reached for the word that fit each clause.
If that pattern feels familiar, it should. We watched Brenton do exactly this with Hades last time, splitting one Greek word into three English ones. He is not being careless. He is doing what every translator must do. But the cumulative effect is identical. The English reader cannot see that there was one word there.
And look what the verse actually claims. The life of the flesh is in the blood. The nephesh is bound up with blood and breath and meat. It is not attached to the body by some spiritual tether, just waiting for release. It is in there, in the most physical sense imaginable, which is precisely why blood matters so much in the sacrificial system.
To say nothing of what it says about the blood of Jesus.
Numbers 6:6 (LXX/Brenton)
he shall not come nigh to any dead body
This is the Nazirite law, and Brenton has smoothed it for us. The Greek, following the Hebrew exactly, does not say dead body.
It says dead psyche. Dead soul.
That phrase appears repeatedly throughout the Torah. A corpse is a dead nephesh. When an Israelite walked past a body in the road and contracted ritual impurity, what he had come near, in the Bible’s own vocabulary, was a dead soul.
Now try to force the Greek concept into that sentence. An immortal, immaterial, indestructible essence cannot be a corpse lying in a field. The words will not go together. Dead soul is a contradiction in Platonic terms and a perfectly ordinary phrase in Hebrew ones, because in Hebrew it just means the entirety of a person that happens to be dead.
That single phrase, I believe, settles the question all by itself.
So do we throw the word away?
As Paul says so many times in his letters, by no means!
But here is where I want to be careful, because last time we retired a word and I do not want you to think we are making a habit of it.
We set aside “hell” because there is no word in the original languages that corresponds to it. It is a Germanic import that English translators used to flatten four different biblical realities into one, and the modern picture attached to it answers to almost nothing any biblical writer ever wrote.
“Soul” is a completely different case. There is a word there. Nephesh is on the page, hundreds of times, and psyche is on the page in the Greek, and “soul” is a perfectly serviceable English rendering of both. The word is not the problem.
The content is the problem.
So we are not retiring this one. We are reclaiming it. From here forward, when you read “soul” in your Bible, I want a different picture to come up. Not a ghost. Not an essence. Not a spiritual self or accompaniment. Not the driver of the car.
A complete person. A whole being. The living, breathing, entirety of a self. The man of dust with the breath of God in his lungs.
Keep the word. Evict the tenant.
Where the tenant came from
I want to trace this, because knowing how an idea arrived is usually the fastest way to see that it arrived from somewhere.
What follows is a short history in four steps. Where the idea was born, how it got into Jewish thought, how it got into Christian thought, and how it got to you. I am compressing centuries into paragraphs, so take this as a sketch rather than a complete exploration of a journey (which would likely comprise several whole books) or even a survey.
Step one, Athens. The immortal soul as we know it is largely Plato’s. In the Phaedo, written as Socrates faces execution, he argues that the soul is immortal, that it existed before the body, and that death is not a tragedy but a release.
The body is a hindrance to the soul, something closer to a prison than a home, and the philosopher spends his life practicing for the moment he gets out. Plato could pun on this in Greek, playing soma, body, against sema, tomb.
I thinking now of that scene from the movie Dragon Heart (1996) here. If you’ve seen it, you know the one. The first time Prince Einon utters the phrase, “death is a release, not a punishment.” That is platonic thought through and through.
But we need to stop here and notice how total the inversion from Hebrew to Greek is. For Plato, getting rid of the body is the goal. For Scripture, getting the body back is the goal, and we will spend an entire post on that later.
Step two, Alexandria. Greek-speaking Jews living in a Greek intellectual world began doing what thoughtful people always do, which is explain their faith in the vocabulary available.
Philo of Alexandria, a devout Jew and a serious Platonist, reads the Hebrew Scriptures through a frame where the soul is the true self and the body is its temporary lodging.
And in the Wisdom of Solomon, a Greek Jewish book of real beauty, you find language of the righteous souls resting in God’s hand and of a perishable body weighing down the soul.
I will be honest with you that this one gives me something to chew on, since Wisdom belongs to the broader Greek Scriptures I take seriously (though not necessarily as authoritative).
My own read is that writing in Greek philosophical idiom is not the same thing as adopting Greek metaphysics, and that a Jewish author can borrow a Greek phrase the way the translators borrowed a Greek word. But I hold that loosely, and it is a fair question to press.
Step three, the church. The early Christian writers inherited that vocabulary and built on it. The most consequential figure here is Augustine, who came to Christ by way of Platonism and never entirely put it down, and whose account of the soul shaped Western Christianity for the next thousand years more than any other single voice.
By the medieval period the immortal immaterial soul is not one view among several. It is simply what everyone knows.
Step four, you. It came down through the catechisms and the hymns and the funeral liturgies, and it arrived in your hands as an assumption rather than an argument. Which is why most of us have never examined it.
You do not examine the floor.
Here is the thing I want to say plainly, because it would be easy to hear all of that as an accusation. Not one of these people was a villain. Philo was a faithful Jew. Augustine was a towering Christian mind and a gift to the church. If you have any doubt of that, read his Confessions. I struggled to follow parts of it, not because the logic was flawed but because my intellect was not quite up to the challenge.
But the point is they were doing what we all do, thinking about God in the language their world handed them.
The tricky part about that is an idea can enter the house through an unlocked door and still be a stranger.
Body, mind, and spirit
So if the soul is the whole person, what do we do with everything else Scripture says about us? Because the Bible plainly talks about body, and heart, and mind, and spirit, and it does not seem to be using those as synonyms.
The soul is the whole person. Body, mind, and spirit are aspects of that one whole, not detachable parts of a kit. They are ways of looking at a single indivisible you, in the same way that your weight and your height and your voice are all genuinely different things about you without being three separate objects.
With one crucial addition, and it is the hinge for everything else in this section.
In the unregenerate person, I believe Scripture is clear that the spirit is dead. That is not a figure of speech. Paul tells the Ephesians they were dead in trespasses and sins, and I take that at face value. Something in a person is genuinely not alive until God makes it alive.
This is what was meant when Adam was told that he would surely die if he ate the fruit. Physical mortality was introduced then, to be sure, but what died immediately upon eating the fruit, just as God said it would, was the spirit part of Adam and Eve.
When a person comes to Christ and receives the Holy Spirit, though, that dead thing is revived. Ezekiel saw it coming centuries early when God promised to put a new spirit within His people.
Jesus told Nicodemus a man must be born again.
The spirit is not a spare part. It is the aspect of the whole person that is dead in us until God breathes on it a second time.
And notice that this is the same pattern as Genesis 2. Dust lies inert until God breathes. The person lies spiritually inert until God breathes again. Scripture tells one story about how human beings come alive, and it tells it twice.
The two hard texts
Now, I would be doing you a disservice if I pretended this was uncontested. A great many serious Christians hold what is called trichotomy, that a human being is three distinct parts, body and soul and spirit, and they hold it because of two passages that genuinely look like they teach it.
Let me give those passages their full weight before I say anything about them.
1 Thessalonians 5:23 (NRSVUE)
May the God of peace himself sanctify you entirely; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
There it is. Three terms, in a row, in a single sentence, from the apostle Paul. If you wanted a verse that lists the components of a human being, this is what it would look like. I understand completely why people read it that way, and anyone who tells you that reading is stupid probably hasn’t read the verse very closely.
Hebrews 4:12 (NRSVUE)
Indeed, the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing until it divides soul from spirit, joints from marrow; it is able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart.
And here is soul and spirit, explicitly divided, by a sword that cuts between them. If they were the same thing there would be nothing to divide.
Those are the two, and together they are a real argument.
But I read them differently.
Allow me to explain.
Start with Hebrews, because I think Hebrews actually answers itself. Look at the second pair in that sentence. Joints from marrow. Now ask yourself the question nobody asks: are joints and marrow two separable components of a person?
They are not. They are deep interior structures of one body that do not come apart in the ordinary course of things. You cannot set your marrow on the table next to your joints. The whole image is of a blade going into a place where the seams are not visible, cutting where you would have said there was no line to cut along. And then the verse finishes by saying this sword judges the thoughts and intentions of the heart, which is to say it goes into the deepest interior of a person and discerns things that person cannot discern about himself.
That is not an anatomy lesson. That is a statement about the terrifying precision of the word of God. It divides what does not naturally divide. If soul and spirit were two obviously separate parts, a sword sharp enough to split them would not be impressive at all.
Are you with me on this?
If you’d like to push back, I’m happy to discuss it in the comments, a reply, or a private message.
And now Thessalonians.
I think Paul is doing something here that he does constantly, which is piling up terms for completeness rather than taking inventory.
Read the first half of the verse again. Sanctify you entirely. That is the thought Paul is pressing, and the three nouns that follow are in service of it. He is not handing the Thessalonians a diagram. He is making sure that no matter how any one of them conceives of themselves, nobody can wriggle out by thinking some part of them falls outside the scope of God’s sanctifying work.
Every aspect.
The whole of you.
Nothing left over.
We talk this way all the time. When somebody says they are committed heart and soul and mind, nobody asks which filing cabinet each one is in.
And I will say this plainly. My reading could be wrong. These are two real verses and the trichotomist is not inventing them.
If you land somewhere else after studying these verses and the background and context, I would genuinely like to talk about it. As before, feel free to comment, reply, or send me a private message. Let’s talk about it. Iron sharpens iron.
But the New Testament is written in Greek
Here is the objection that should be forming in your mind, and it is probably the sharpest one available.
If the detachable soul is a Greek import, what do we make of the fact that the New Testament is written in Greek, by authors using the word psyche, sometimes in ways that sound dualistic?
It’s a fair question with what is, I believe, a straightforward answer.
The New Testament writers did not learn their Greek vocabulary from Plato. They learned it from the Septuagint. These are men steeped in the Greek Old Testament, where psyche has been doing Hebrew work for two and a half centuries, carrying the meaning of nephesh across thousands of verses. When they write psyche they mean what Moses meant when he wrote nephesh.
There is also a simple historical point worth making. Of all the New Testament authors, only Luke and Paul had the kind of education and exposure that would make deep Platonic influence likely. Peter was a fisherman. John was right there with him. James and Jude were steeped in Hebrew and/or Aramaic, like most Galileans. Matthew’s Gospel is the most deeply Hebrew of them all.
None of these men were reading the Phaedo.
But let’s talk about the single verse people usually reach for in this conversation:
Matthew 10:28 (NRSVUE)
Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell.
On the dualist reading, this at least appears, on the surface, to be a clean proof text. Body and soul, two things, one killable and one not.
I read it almost the opposite way.
The contrast is not between a part that dies and a part that cannot. The contrast is about jurisdiction. Your persecutors have real but strictly limited power. They can take your life in this age, and that is the absolute edge of what they can do to you. Their authority stops at the grave. God’s does not. He holds the whole of you, including the part of you that persists past death and will be restored entire at the resurrection.
And notice what the verse actually says God can do. Destroy both soul and body. Not preserve the soul forever in torment. Destroy. Whatever else that means, it is not a sentence about an indestructible essence, and we will come back to it in a later post when we talk about the final state.
So the point is that the fear being redirected here is not fear of losing a component. It is fear of the One who holds all of you in His hands.
If you’ve found this work insightful, enlightening, or even challenging, the most direct way to share it is by restacking. But you can also share it directly with any friend who needs to see that Sheol and the afterlife are nothing like what we were always taught.
Dig deeper
If you want to watch the pattern hold on your own, here are more places where nephesh and psyche plainly mean the living person, the life, or the self, with no detachable essence anywhere in view. References only, so you can look them up and see for yourself.
Do remember that nephesh and psyche are often translated in ways other that “soul” so be looking for words like "life," "person," "creature," and "body" as well.
Genesis 9:4-5. Genesis 12:13. Genesis 17:14. Exodus 1:5. Exodus 21:23. Leviticus 21:11. Numbers 19:11-13. Deuteronomy 6:5. Deuteronomy 12:23. Joshua 10:28. 1 Samuel 18:1. Psalm 42:1-2 (LXX 41:1-2). Psalm 103:1 (LXX 102:1). Jeremiah 38:17 (45:17 in the LXX). Ezekiel 18:4. Jonah 2:5. Acts 2:41. Acts 27:37. Romans 13:1.
Pay particular attention to the ones that count people, the ones that describe souls dying or being killed, and the ones where “soul” could be swapped for “life” or “myself” without changing anything. That last category is the largest by far.
Questions for reflection
If you are a soul rather than a possessor of one, does that change anything about how you treat your body, or anyone else’s? The church has often been more comfortable talking about souls than about bodies. Should that change, and what would it look like if it did?
Scripture calls animals nephesh in exactly the same words it uses for Adam. What, if anything, does that imply about how we are meant to regard animal life? The text raises the question without answering it.
Our funerals, hymns, and sympathy cards run on detachable-soul language almost entirely. Is that imprecision harmless pastoral comfort, or does it do real damage over time? Where would you draw the line between a kindness and a falsehood?
If the spirit is an aspect of the whole person rather than a separate compartment or something attached with an invisible tether, what is actually happening to a person at the moment of conversion? Can you describe it without using the word “part.”
The Alexandrian translators made a reasonable choice that had consequences no one intended that only came to fruition much later. Where might faithful translation decisions being made right now be setting up consequences we cannot yet see?
What this sets up
Two words down.
We have watched Hades absorb an underworld it was never meant to carry, and we have watched soul absorb a spirit or essence or ghost the Hebrew Scriptures never imagined. Both times the mechanism was the same. The word arrived clean. The reader filled it.
Next time we go after the biggest one of all, and this time we really are retiring a word. We are going to look at where our picture of fire and pitchforks and eternal torment chambers actually came from, and I will tell you now that the trail does not lead to Scripture. It leads to a Norse goddess, a Roman poet, a non-canonical apocalypse, and a fourteenth-century Italian with an extraordinary imagination and a score to settle.
Until then, may the Lord be with you.
And as always, follow Acts 17:11. Be Berean. Don’t take my word for any of this. Check the texts for yourself to prove whether or not it’s true.

Well darn! I got saved under "I am a soul, I live in a body and I have a spirit". I like the Nephesh idea very much. It leaves the dead->living spirit where it should be, but puts ME back together as I was before, and then rejoins myself as "all of me". (Think How to train your dragon...) I am looking forward to the rest of this.
