It’s the night Babylon fell. The night a king saw a hand writing on his wall and watched his kingdom end before the sun came up. And it gives us one of the most famous phrases in all of human language, so famous that even people who’ve never opened a Bible use it.
And true to form, the Old Greek tells this story quite differently from other traditions. The result is a leaner, faster, and in some ways stranger version of the same night.
This is a great article, and I appreciate all the historical insights. Sadly, the reliability of the Book of Daniel has often been attacked given its supposed historical "inconsistencies" and "errors." But as you have demonstrated here, often what first appears as error can be explained for those willing to do the research.
While I was reading this story, I kept thinking of the Scales constellation. Written in the Heavens has a good article on the Scales and how the names of the stars witness to our deficient price being paid by Yahushua. It complements this story nicely.
And yes, absolutely. One of the things that has always driven me nuts is the view that "Daniel has to be written late." Especially because usually the evidence given for that is the predictions are "too accurate."
The thing that I love is that over the centuries archaeology has repeatedly shown Daniel to be correct. Especially on things that no 2nd-4th century writer could have known. It's proof that Daniel was written by an eye witness to the events.
